Meet the Finn Family
The Finn family, based in Gundaroo just outside Canberra, is passionate about sharing the outback experience with locals and visitors alike. Jimmy and Kylie Finn run Bushfield Farm Camels, but all their children plus nine grandchildren are part of their farm life. Their grandchildren love coming by and cuddling the camels, who knows, they may have some future cameleers in the works.
For Kylie, the venture is the realization of a lifelong dream. Her love for camels began early, and she’s spent years fascinated by these “ships of the desert.” In 2022, a two-week adventure with seasoned cameleers introduced Jim and Kylie to “camel time” – a slower pace dictated by the gentle rhythms of these majestic animals. This philosophy of slowing down and connecting with nature is now central to the experiences they offer.
Bushfield Farm Camels is more than a business; it’s a tribute to the bond Jim and Kylie Finn have built with their growing herd. The journey began with Trevor, a charismatic camel who quickly became a beloved petting camel, adored by children, disability groups, and school visitors. Today, the Finns have a herd of eleven camels that roam peacefully across their 70-acre property.
Bushfield Farm Camels is also a learning hub. Kylie, a devoted reader of camel history, shares her knowledge of Australia’s cameleer past with every visitor. From the explorers of the 1840s and their opening up central Australia to the critical role camels played in WWI, the Finns immerse visitors in the unique story of these animals.
The Finn family is bringing a touch of the outback spirit to Canberra’s doorstep.
